My dad (back in upstate NY) had a pole-based bird feeder up that was taken over by squirrels. If anyone tapped on the sunporch window, all of the squirrels would vamoose except for one physically large squirrel that had a patch of dark hair on its left chin, giving it the name “Dirty Face” Dirty Face would actually walk up to the sunporch and smack the windows repeatedly indicating the feeder was empty and he was hungry. Kept this up until my dad was trained to bring out food for him (fuhgeddaboud the others), Dirty Face was there for about three seasons, then disappeared. Was about the time the hawks took up residence in the swamp next door when he went missing.
squirrels are demanding. don’t you dare miss a day if you start feeding them. they’ll invade the house and cause havoc. inventing a squirrel proof bird feeder is an ongoing design quest. there are those advertised claiming to have succeeded but rarely are those claims at all accurate.

Only one bird. Might as well call it a squirrel feeder!

I designed squirrel proof feeder but gave it up when I realized it would fry as many birds as squirrels.
