Third morning in New Orleans, I woke up and there was a spider the size of my hand on the wall four feet over my head. Caught it in a margarine tub and took it outside. If I’d had an empty aquarium, I’d’ve kept it.

Spiders are good. They eat bugs.

In my home, I call it “seek and destroy” missions. When I see one of those Palmetto bugs (roaches so big you can saddle them up and fly around the house on them), I find one of my cats (only one likes to hunt the roaches the other prefers other critters) and put him in the area I last saw the roach. Within minutes he has that thing clutched firmly between either paws or teeth. He’s even better at hunting in the middle of the night since there’s less distraction in the house. I pay him with a pat on the head and a kiss. If it’s a small roach I let him kill and eat it. Those large ones though, I take from him so I can smash with a shoe as some have been known to escape the cat’s attention and run into the walls never to be seen again.

Gee, send your cat to eat a possibly poisonous spider? Who would do that?
