I have always thought that forcing a kid to do UTTERLY rote work is a sure way to antagonize the bright ones… and completely useless for the ones who simply cannot. If you’ve got a kid who can write that line 25 times, you’ve got a kid who doesn’t need to be broken to the harness. And if you think you DO need to break them to the harness, you belong in some other job than teaching.
In parochial grade school, I found the best place to put my attention was out the window. The nuns didn’t like that. Made me stand in front of the class and sing ‘beautiful dreamer’. Now that was good entertainment!
Sixth grade we were tested on all 50 states and the capital. Didn’t pass and had to hand write every one 50 times. How many do you think I remember 60 years later? Waste of time and paper.

Poor kids. Trapped in a dismal prison called school.
