… or … perhaps he is familiar … and he’s about to break into one (or more) of the piggy banks (again). [What he has saved could be just right for this rainy day.]

I realize it’s less satisfying, but he could just remove the rubber stopper on the bottom.

I just looked up the expression “Save for a rainy day”. Seems to have originated in Britain, where I’ve heard they have a lot of rainy days. If that is the case, it seems to be contrary to what the expression is supposed to mean. Maybe they should have an expression for such areas, “Save for a sunny day.”

Also might mean a rainy day figuratively speaking. Something goes wrong, car trouble, plumbing or electrical issue in the house, could be the rainy day mentioned, and to save up for such emergencies would make a lot of sense.

Is it common to put a broken piggy bank back together? I wouldn’t know; I never owned one.
