Sorry to ruin the fun, but Britain almost entered the Civil War on the side of the south, because the cotton crop was so vital to their fabric industry. Given that this was the case, if the colonies had lost the Revolutionary War, slavery would probably have remained in place. Due to their need for cheap cotton, it’s unlikely that Britain would have freed the slaves earlier than the Emancipation Proclamation. In fact, there are some science fiction stories of alternate histories that project that, if the Revolutionary War had been won by Britain, slavery would be in place now…
