I know nobody reads the comics to learn to use the English language correctly, but it should read “There WAS a tiny handful..” You would use the plural if you were saying, “There WERE tiny handfuls…” (interestingly, there is another discussion on the difference between “handful” and “handsful” and “hands full”). To avoid making the plural use mistake, make your statement without the confusing adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. Express it with just the subject, verb, and object: “There WAS handful…”, or “There WERE handfuls..” For the most part, it isn’t hard to find the right choice.
