The heat only increases the odds of a collision. It isn’t actually necessary. It’s the gravity that does the work in naturally occurring fusion reactions, with the heat being only a byproduct.

I tried microwaving my fusion generator once. Alas, it was hot on the outside but the inside was still cold.
