SUSAN You have posted before on COLA. What part of 0% inflation don’t you understand. Costs are stagnant Food, housing, and gas have remained the same or gone down. Why by God should we get an increase? Try some simple math, multiply be zero (you following?) The answer is zero. That is how much more you are paying for living. How come the interest rates are so low. Wait I know this one. The housing market went bust. Gee, does that mean I can buy a house cheaper?
Could it be that you feel you have an entitlement to more money every year because that’s how it was in times of inflation? Ahhh, those glorious days of Jimmy Carter when you spent your paycheck on Friday cause it was worthless on Saturday.
FishStix: the “core inflation rate” used to compute COLA does not include such luxury items as food and fuel. Everybody knows people receiving social security don’t eat or drive or need heat… Of late they might have been fairly flat, but for most of the last eight years the real inflation rate (including these items) has been going up faster than the “core” rate, and that’s left SS recipients in the lurch.
Lets see now, potatoes are cheap at $1/ lb. onions are cheap at $1/ lb. and lettuce is really cheap at only $1.79 a head. And of course tomatoes at $3.99/ lb.
Gas at $3 plus per gallon. Those people on a fixed income are just making out like bandits these days….
how many of you are actually trying to do something about this? sounds like most of you just like to complain and cry. yes i have my health concerns too. do any of you volunteer or do something.

Back in the 30’s there was a popular saying “Good Times Are just Around The Corner” We’ve not only turned that corner but went off a steep enbankment now teetering on the edge of a cliff
as a canuck, i’m not entirely sure how the social security system works, but isn’t it for people who are retired or disabled? how can those people be told to “get a job” and quit expecting everyone to take care of them? if that’s your attitude, FishStix, it’s a mighty uncaring world you live in. a bit of human compassion should be the least that people can expect.
Thank you, yyyguy. You’ve said exactly what I was feeling. Since I’ve been retired for over 10 years, I’d find it very hard for anyone who’d want to hire me at my age.
After two years of layoff, I put in for early SS, which covers the house payment. Now after five years of layoff, a couple short gigs, a few interviews and no offers, I’m eligible for Medicare, so a chunk’s taken out of SS for it.
Make something out of your favorite hobby, and get good at it (just like we tell the kids to do); and hope it covers the rest.
But don’t depend on anybody inside the DC Beltway to fix your world for you. Just ain’t gonna happen.
