Steinmetz used to smoke stinky cigars. When he worked at General Electric, they put up a “No Smoking” sign over his desk. He wrote on the sign, below the No Smoking, “NO STEINMETZ”. And left for the day. The next day, when he came to work, he had won! They took down the “No Smoking” sign!!
Another story about Steinmetz at GE. He would walk to work and often on the way he’d be thinking about some problem that GE had. And he’d get so involved in the thinking about it that he’d often walk right past GE and end up out in the countryside. So GE had all the cab companies in Schenectady on retainers with instructions that if they saw Steinmetz walking somewhere, they were to follow him at a respectful distance so as to not disturb his thinking until Steinmetz ‘woke up’ and looked around like he was lost. Then the cab driver was to come up to Steinmetz and pick him up and take him back to GE!
I recall Skyler catching the Prof. looking out the window while his typewriter stands unattended. “Shouldn’t you be pounding a key board instead of staring out the window”, asks Skyler. “Typists pound key boards, writers stare out of windows”, replies the Prof. One of all time favorite Shoe cartoons. Great observation by the Prof.
“First Tuesday in October”, where Walter Mathou plays a SCOTUS justice with a desk like that, knew where everything was. That was what my desk at work was like, and still is at home (retired). My spousal unit “organized me” one time, it was two YEARS before I could find anything. She never touched my desk again. Had several “bosses” who had the “clean desk” concept, and proved each time, a clean desk is a “clean mind”, or, actually, an EMPTY one!!

Very good. I had a boss like that, a few times, but they were the ones at the desk.

p.s. I could also get more done in two hours, than those “bosses” could in two YEARS!
