I remember coming home from school and while ironing, my Mother would be listening to ‘Our Gal Sunday’ and ‘Ma Perkins’ and then she would listen to ‘Queen For A Day’ ! !Is it any wonder, I hid out in my room until my homework was done and then headed immediately out to play(this was before we got the FIRST tv in the neighborhood ! ! !!
Two points: every tv comedy or drama series is, in its way, a soap – ongoing stories to distract and amuse. And – there is some excellent acting on soaps. A number of award winning actors have put in time on the soaps. It is a case of don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it. I, too, came home to my mother listening to Ma Perkins or Our Gal Sunday and couldn’t understand the attraction. When she switched to TV soaps, I would listen to her attempts to explain what was happening and glaze over. But there was a time when it was nice to escape to the insane bizarre world of over the top heroes and aging women who somehow were beating off more men at one time than I dated in my entire life.
Back in the 1960’s went over to grandmas house to watch soaps and take care of her sick dog.We watched “As The Stomach Churns.”(thanks Carol Burnett).. ;-)
