Have you ever heard about zero landscaping. That’s what I have. 2" plus of rocks, bushes, yuccas, decorative rock. I put 2" of composite around my tree and landscape fabric. It takes a little time but it’s worth it. I choose bright colors and the green looks great. Make the area you mow smaller, add a picnic table and barbecue and you have an additional entertainment area.
For those who think they are doing the planet a favor by replacing their lawns with other materials such as rocks, compost, etc.; remember lawn grasses, along with other live vegetation, removes a lot of CO2 from the air as well as filtering out a great deal of particulate matter.

We had 5-1/2 acres. Had a guy come in to get hay once a year on the 4-1/2; and push-power mowed the rest.

My dad was still mowing his 1/2 acre right up until he died at 93. Not a riding mower, either.

He shouldn’t throw that old lawn mower away! There are “green” folks who foolishly pay big money for those “environmentally friendly” mowers…

Of course, everything in moderation…
