I had a chemistry set when I was a kid. Lots of cards detailing actual experiments. I had more fun just mixing all the different chemicals together and heating it up with the alcohol burner. No small wonder I didn’t blow myself up. Mind you, I guess they didn’t put anything too scary in the set, knowing it would be used by kids. Hadn’t thought about that thing in years. Good memory of finding that under the Christmas tee.

My home-made gunpowder led to a home-made cannon. The first test in the basement pushed a marble through two walls before disintegrating in a large divot in the cement wall of the laundry room – which my mother had just left.

When I was a kid they had an “Atomic Energy” lab kit to explore radioactivity at home. (can you believe it?) see here: https://www.orau.org/ptp/collection/atomictoys/GilbertU238Lab.htm

Reminds me of my youth in the 1950’s. We didn’t have the restrictions we have today, and we did blow up my buddy’s basement- including putting a piece of a pipe bomb clear through the water heater.
