Some of us don’t truly understand. I had my student loans paid off before leaving at the end of the year. But that was back in 1972.

Like insurance, government grants and loans drive up costs. Patients used to rarely ask how much something costs because insurance was taking care of it. After a while hospitals, doctors and schools realized the sky was the limit; they could right a blank check. Now with high deductibles, people are beginning to ask doctors how much a procedure costs. Universities have their trotters in the government money trough, (scholarships, grants, even depts in the univesity that seek out gov. money) allowing them to charge exorbitant fees. Of course, if you can’t fit the criteria for a grant or some other freebee, you’re stuck paying the inflated price. A bachelors now is about the equivalent of a high school diploma back in the 50’s. I think if the government is going to grant money, they should also include trade schools; where you can actually find work post graduation.

Public universities lost it when they went from education models to business models to govern themselves.

I quit school early, with full credits. Went to work for the Forest Service for two years. Every dime went into a savings account. I then went to college. Two loans, scholarships and what I saved gave me a total $6K debt when I graduated in 82.

I’ve had student loans twice – once in 1980 and again in 1991. Took years to pay off but it was worth it.

Must be 50 years in the future. If he’s that old now, college was cheap when he was young. It’s today’s college students that are stuck with a ridiculously large bill.

Me TOO! Not everyone needs to go to a so-called ‘prestigious’ university/college. There’s a ton of research out there that says one degree over another really doesn’t matter: it’s THE PERSON that counts! Be the best YOU can be and the rest will follow.
