Then why does my Good and Honest Government want so much of my money? Is it to keep me from sinning? I didn’t think that all those upright politicians had so much virtue in them.
Who cares, as long as they can be platinum members. Incredible bragging rights among fellow church members, but bring it up in casual conversation. And tax deductible, thanks to overpaid politicians.
Long ago there was a TV Preacher named Reverend Ike. He would come out in a Rolls, fancy suit, and good looking babes. His pitch was, “God likes me. If you send me $100 I’ll pray that God will like you to. For an extra $50 I’ll send you this Rev. Ike prayer mat so you can pray to God to like you!” I can totally see him saying “Money is the root of all evil. Send me all your money and I’ll save you from sin.”
I hate these hypocritical, lying “televangelists”! But, at least if they are using the moron’s cash to build Crystal Cathedrals, they can’t send it to the Republican party.
That’s not the quote. What Jesus actually said was, “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil,” meaning greed. Money is perfectly fine, greed however is not.
Got to support the local Church and its running, expenses etc. However, I choose what charities that I wish to support and put the bulk of my charitable contributions there…..
My dad got an emergency service call one Sunday. A commercial grade paper shredder had jammed. A broadcast ministry’s church’s staff pulled out the checks and money and shredded everything else so there was no evidence of the financial volume flowing through that little building. That little building has had several generations of scandal failed churches reorganizing into another scandal failed church. They never succeeded in chasing out all of the rats.
Those guys sure do a lot of rooting around in the evil. I don’t know if you can still get it, but see “Marjoe” a documentary movie about a boy who had been forced into being a “trained seal” of an evangelist at an early age. At the age of 18, he returned to the evangelical circuit with an underground film crew. The discussions with other pastors are especially revealing. It’s all about the Benjamins.
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all of evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
In my apartment building, we sometimes mistakenly get mail destined for the apartment building across the street. (And vice-versa, sometimes, I think; that book of cheques the bank once sent me that ended up emptying my account…) I sometimes walk them over, sometimes just write something like “Misdelivered—please deliver correctly” on them and pop them into a mailbox. A couple of times lately, there have been some misdirected mail, mistakenly delivered to me but addressed to someone across the street, from some televangelist—Kenneth Copeland and some other guy. I had to think hard over the ethics of the situation—would I really be doing a service to the real addressee by sending the mail on? (I ended up sending it on, but with misgivings.)
Best take on televangelists and the people they scam summed up by Mark Knopfler in “Ticket to Heaven”, IMO. Poignant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGhq_Tg5xwg&ab_channel=MarkKnopfler%27sWorld
(Cue the church organ music) Before we go children, remember Jesus, our Lord and Savior. It is through Him that you can get to Heaven. He be praised, and ye be saved! And I can help you to find Jesus. All it takes in penance… and a slight donation! Hallelujah!

Why do so many get that quote wrong? It is the love of money that is the root of all evil.

If you send enough money, Brother Billy Bob will have his staff print out your name with a labeler and stick it on the outside of his personal jet.

Yes, “money is for a protection” but it is wisdom that preserves the life of the owner
