In college I had to read “The Rocking Horse” by D.H. Lawrence. I emphatically HATE symbolism. Because he wrote “Lady Chattery’s Lover” as well as a few other “erotic” tales we spent the class trying to find the sex in “The Rocking Horse”. What I read was a story about a boy who loved to rock on his horse. While rocking he would go into a trance & could “see” who would win at the races. It’s been over 30 years, so please excuse me for not remembering the relationship the boy had with the man placing the bets. The money made was given to the boy’s mother as the family was in dire straits. I read it as a little boy wanting to help his Mum. The pervs in class read as an Oedipus syndrome and in fact the money was symbolic semen! It was so gross. The boy never made it to adulthood. Indeed he didn’t make it to his teens where MAYBE he would have developed an unhealthy attachment to his mother.

He had a habit of picking horses who had a sore foot. I guess he thought that they would run faster so the could then get of their bunion.
