Very possibly, his dog is what he misses most. It IS honor to remember that they are plain humans, not natural “heroes,” and the most stinging sacrifices are not life and limb. Take your sanctimonious and humorless self over to Red and Rover and see what that soldier’s thoughts of his dog does for you.
Just because the soldiers are serving in a war doesn’t mean their lives and everything that gives them joy and happiness disappears. When you are far from home you live for those things you love most. This isn’t mocking our soldiers. This is paying tribute to the fact they care enough about what they and everyone else in this country holds dear to go and defend it for us. Never forget them but also never forget they are human too.
Did you catch the note on the bottom? “Visit ngl.org”. No Greater Love is a tribute— very touching, and worth supporting. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
When I was gone for 2 weeks I wanted to call and leave a mesage on the answering machine so the cats would hear my voice, but my aunt wouldn’t let me. (Yes, I was 42, but she was paying the long distance bill. This was before unlimited cell service.)
I think there’s actually a website dedicated to home videos of troops getting home and greeting their incredibly enthusiastic and ecstatic pets before they greet their spouses. It’s funny and tear-jerking and testimony to the endearing love of animals.

This crossed a line for me. On Memorial Day you honor the troops, not mock them.
