Most to all singers and bands do NOT write their own music. They buy it ‘under the table’ from those who have actually written it.For example ‘Jump’ by the Pointer Sisters was actually written by a coworker of mine. I saw her writing it while she was supposed to be silk screening some stuff for Miller Beer at the time of the writing.
I’ve played for a lot original bands. One was Robbin Thompson who was one of the original founders of Bruce Springsteen’s first band Steel Mill. I played for the Buddy Parker Band which opened for the likes of BB King, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Joe Bonamassa, etc. In all of the original bands, the vast majority of the music was written by the leader of the band or a corroboration of all of us in the band. Robbin wrote some music for Poco. I have a friend Ronnie Fetner who sells his music to country singers.Purchasing songs is very popular in country music; not as much in rock or blues. There’s my 2 cents worth. Here’s Buddy’s last concert before he had to be institutionalized for bi-polar disorder. I’m the drummer.
Yes. One band plays original songs and copy material that is rearranged. For example The Letter by the Box Tops is done in a reggae beat. The other is all original. It’s called Subtle Frankenstein. Here’s a cut from the album still being master mixed.https://soundcloud.com/subtle-frankenstein/world-of-love
Writing lyrics that actually combine well enough with your original music is the tricky part, and it’s a process that usually involves other musicians. Even Paul McCartney or Tom Petty sound best with their bands….
Then there are the few, like Neil Young or Stephen Stills or Richard Thompson…. no band necessary!

My Songbird lyrics – Jesse Winchester
Songbird in a golden cageShe’d prefer the blueHow I crave the liquor of her song.
Poor bird who has done no harmWhat harm could she do ?She shall be my prisoner her life long.
My songbird wants her freedomNow don’t you think I know ?But I can’t find it in myselfTo let my songbird goI just can’t let her go.
O Lord, when your jeweler’s eyePeers into my soulO Lord, I am overcome with shame.
Take me, Lord, and purifyHeal me with a wordLord, I beg a gift I dare not claim.
My songbird wants her freedomNow don’t you think I know ?But I can’t find it in myselfTo let my songbird goI just can’t let her go.
Thanks, Just Joking
