They do in fact, emit less, and that is taking into account the emissions from whatever power plant they may be getting their electricity from. Now, if you have a solar house (and I know several folks who are now totally solar), you can do nearly all your charging off grid. Not for everyone – certainly not affordable for most right now – but not as polluting as average cars.
