My step-daughter would smoke in her bedroom when she lived with us. She cut a hole in her window’s screen and would flick her ashes out that hole. She thought that her mother and I didn’t know, but I would find cigarette butts and ashes outside the garage door below her window (we live in a split level condo). We could also smell the smoke.
