I have seen opium being harvested in SE Asia. It doesn’t come from the flowers, but from latex that oozes from incised green seed pods. The latex is collected after it dries. The opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, is the same species that produces the poppy oil and the poppy seeds that are used in baking. The seeds and the oil are legal because they contain only extremely small amounts of opiates.
Erik Blair (George Orwell), his father was sent by the Brits to promote opium growing in Afghanistan, to hook the chinese, it’s still their major crop, and source of the REAL drug problem in the US, promoted by Big Pharma.

Well, I learned a lot here today that I really didn’t need to know – but it was interesting. And, I love lemon poppy-seed muffins!
