I used to sew (mostly repairs, but occasionally projects). More recently I wanted some toweling thrice ‘round my water bottle so I could put 200º water in it and not burn myself. Turns out that I’m fast and accurate with masking tape (and a string tied around the bottom to keep it from sliding through. And it’s lasted perhaps 100s of uses so far. And those funky looking holey towels got used for a good thing. I’ve been surprised that the masking tape seems to be getting STRONGER…
Making crafts sometimes costs more than purchasing the same object. Baking cookies is a much safer plan. Or you can hit the Dollar Tree. They have some surprisingly good stuff.
I bake 4 types of cookies and make chocolate mint fudge for around 50 people. Most are in the community band that I play in and the rest are other friends of ours. I also make a cookie platter for the oncology center where my husband goes.

If you’re strapped for cash, just don’t buy gifts. Don’t. Simply don’t.
