For several years I offered folks at work cookies for 5¢ each, just drop the money in this can. And it sort of worked, pretty near and close enough. Then we hired a new team manager and I had to stop making them available. Two packages of cookies eaten over a couple of days and not a penny in the can. Not that I’m pointing fingers… oh no!
As ‘outside’ employees, the company gave each of the appraisers a desk for use when we were in the office. There were two of us. When the manager drew up the seating plan after the remodel, he put our desks across from his secretary’s desk, close to his door. I think he liked having our usually empty desks as a buffer between himself and the rest of the office. Of course, our desks became the de facto eating space for sharing donuts, or plunking whatever impromptu goodies people brought from home.
What the boss forgot was, it’s the nature of appraisers to be opinionated, argumentative and loud. (I got a bit vocal when I came in to find someone eating, and spilling tacos all over my desk. My cohort was more forgiving but, he was used to singing to himself in his car during the day, and sometimes he forgot and broke out in song in the office.) It was not too long before our desks got moved. We were tucked into an alcove as far away from the boss’s door as possible.
