I remember a short story wherein a guy was in his apartment with a cat, saw news reports of strange things happening, and spun a fantastical tale of aliens arriving as cats (or something similar). The cat told him to forget it. And he did.
Cats are actually probe droids from another dimension which is why they stare at walls. They are looking at something that used to be there or will be there. Purring is telemetry back to the mother ship.
