We recently had to deal with a DMV that’s not in our locality… and were very pleasantly surprised by the efficiency and politeness of the staff there. Of course, they did have the advantage of a location where the parking was accessible only by driving into what appeared to ba an “out only” driveway (it was a very poorly placed sign). Once we figured that out, it took less than 45 minutes from getting in the door where we were greeted by a staffer whose job that day was to make sure we got into the correct virtual queue through the process to when we gave him a pleasant good-bye wave on our way out. With no appointment. In the one DMV office that serves a population of about 150,000 people. The seats were even almost comfortable!
Gotta say, our local DMV is pretty good. I’ve never spent more than an hour at the place, and that includes a couple of complicated transactions. Now, of course, I don’t even have to show up to renew my license. All on line.
My birthday is November 29th. One year I had forgotten to renew and only remembered at the last minute – and Thanksgiving was the 28th… But lo and behold the DMV was open the 29th and when I got there at around 9:15 – I WAS THE ONLY ONE THERE… with three clerks to serve me… The rest of the world was out doing Black Friday stuff
Since we went to appt’s with Covid, it’s been a very positive experience. There are always a crowd of people who have a hard time reading, but when your appt time is up, so are you. Some nasty glares from people who’d been there long before me.

I believe “The Good Place” already indicated as much.

I love the DMV closest to me, even without an appointment I was in and out in 45 minutes and the smog station is 1/4 mile away.
