This is going to be an uncomfortable week in Tank. Keep in mind that these strips have to be done a couple of weeks in advance.
Jeff and I meant no disrespect to Nodar Kumaritashvili, his Georgian teammates or his family.
That’s a BOBSLED people. Get over it…My comment is that they’d need to watch out for the barbed wire fences in the fields. Those get the snowmobilers more than anything.
Mr. Hinds, thank you for the disclaimer. I suspect most of us are grown-ups and know the difference between a once funny script and one with a touch of ironic tragedy. In the Free Press, Mitch Albom talked about wiping out in a luge going only 30 mph back when he covered the sport. It happens all the time, especially in the Olympics since the home teams ALWAYS make it difficult to check the runs. It just usually doesn’t kill the person. Doing a report on the incident could be considered insulting, too, by the overly sensitive. YouTube has a special warning on the stills they displayed and they were hardly excessive. Thanks for years of funny, for laughs whenever I read the strip and for real knowledge of sports.
Thank you for your comment. Honestly, I think luge and skeleton, head first, sledding are a bit too dangerous anyways. Maybe the Olympics will now look at removing those two sports.
Actually, have you noticed that NBC is showing an awful lot of luge these past few days. Perhaps they are taking advantage of the 18 to 34 male demographic wanting to see another spectacular crash?
Ski-jump skeet, with long-range paint-ball guns used by the shooting competitors, as the other competition goes on. Extra points for causing a crash.
This bobsled joke is an unfortunate coincidence, but is a damned funny joke, nonetheless. All these winter sports have an edge-of-danger component, which is one of the reasons we watch. We hope they don’t get injured if they do crash, but we enjoy those nearly as much as the successful runs.

Right, because Kumaritashvili was the first guy in a winter sport ever to buy the farm.
I rather think the danger of some sports was established quite a long while ago.

The cartoon is less funny than it would have been, but that’s a chance any topical comic strip runs. Everything has its risks in life.
(If they need more snow in British Columbia, perhaps they could take some from Philadelphia. We have plenty.)
