no, it is NOT inevitable. if the baseball hall is so difficult to get into, they can turf out any steroid users who get in under false pretenses. if hockey’s hall can rescind memberships, so can baseball’s.

yyy, what can they do about folks who never got caught, or who used such substances before they were banned? The whole issue will be played out in another 5 or so years when any player who tested positive will be retired. If their stats match those of other HOF members, vote them in and let the time they played be known as “before steroid time”, or “during steroid era”.

MisngNOLA, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Even in situations where pretty much everyone with a brain KNOWS that steroids were being used - ie, Barry Bonds - without either rock-solid proof or an admission on his part, the Hall will have to let him in based on his stats. As you said, there should just be a notation that Player X played during the steroid era.

Sadly, Bonds, and probably McGwire, would have been elected without the ‘roids, based on the entire body of work. And fluky careers like Sosa and Palmeiro wouldn’t have helped them. Roger Maris is NOT in the HOF, despite that record season.

But it’s not the Hall which lets players in, it’s whether they are voted in by the electing group. Let’s see if they have the ‘nads to keep the junkies out. Except it was only illegal under Federal laws, not baseball’s.

gofins, when McGwire was using andro, it was not only not against baseball rules, it was also legal under federal and state laws and available over the counter at nearly every GNC or similar store in the country. Look it up.
