I guess if I followed basketball rather than baseball, I would know what flopping is.

“Flopping” is when you exaggerate the level of (usually) incidental contact between players to try getting a foul whistled by the referee. It’s been used in soccer and basketball for years.

This is so timely with the NBA just having addressed flopping…I’m impressed. Jeff and Bill (if you’re reading these posts), how far ahead do you draw these strips? Can’t be much more than a week out.

Two weeks for the dailies. A month and a half for the Sundays. Sometimes our crystal ball gets dusty.

Football has it, too, and the original is Boxing, or Wrestling! Does soccer?

When Shawn Respert played for Michigan State, he had this “talent” of drawing charging fouls on an opponent. He would grab the front of the opponent’s jersey and fall backwards, which caused the opponent to take an extra step forward. He was very subtle about doing it, until Clem Haskins, the coach at Minnesota, alerted the referees to watch for it before a game I attended. I still remember how perplexed Respert was when the foul was called on him. What’s sort of odd is: Respert is now a coach for the Timberwolves and one of his duties is to coach how not to flop.

Basketball players cannot even come close to mastering the art of the flop, the dive, the theatrical injury , as performed by soccer players !Fortunately, even there, officiating has tightened up and indirect kick penalties and yellow cards are assessed against the “flopper” with more regularity. It is regarded as time wasting and poor sportsmanship. It’s also bad acting !
