Why not? There’s nothing in the rules that limits nominations to professional (or even performing amateur) athletes. The biggest problem will be looking up the guy’s name, and then getting it around to other people. Pros have a built in advantage that even the most tenuous sports follower has probably heard of them.
The NBA will simply use the same Facial Recognition tech the Casinos use to Identify “Card Counters” when they ban them..It works. I used to have a friend who got Banned.She got met by a “Security” agent right inside the door of every casino she went near for the next 3 years.
