When I think of Tennessee, I don’t think about their football teams – it’s all about women’s basketball. As a UConn Huskies fan, I always looked forward to those clashes with the Lady Vols. The battles between Geno and Pat were epic and not to be missed. My late mother was, for many years, a big fan of women’s basketball and grudgingly would admit that the Lady Vols were a good team – just not as good as her UConn Huskies !
If you don’t already know (NCAA women’s BB doesn’t get a lot of international press), Pat Summit had to step down following the 2012 season, after she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s by August, 2011.UConn is again #1 in both major polls; but, the Lady Vols aren’t ranked in either, and currently #28 in the latest RPI rankings (which, by some quirk, has unbeaten UConn #3, can see both polls from that link too). They’ll probably make the NCAA tournament; but, they’re not nearly the power they once were. South Carolina is ranked the highest in the SEC.
