Baseball certainly has an awful lot of rules for one sport.

Because you can’t use a pitcher every day in the lineup.

Don Drysdale for the Dodgers in the ‘60s was a threat on the mound and at the plate. Heck, the Dodgers were known to call him in to pinch-hit.

I love it when a pitcher can help himself at the plate; Madison Bumgarner, Greg Maddux… It’s one of the reasons I prefer the NL to the AL.

Tim Lincecum wasn’t a great hitter, but I saw him pitch a complete-game shutout (3-0, 8K, 7H, 1BB) against the A’s in 2009, when he also had the game-winning hit (since it was a shutout, his 5th-inning single to put the Giants up 1-0 was the only run they needed, but it was still the game-winning RBI). That was fun.

One of the great performances of MLB’s somewhat recent past was by Rick Wise in 1971, when he no-hit the Reds and hit two HRs.
