The reason that nowadays coaches and athletes hold press conferences after The Big Game is the experience of a Boston reporter named Lisa Olson. When she asked that athletes leave their locker rooms long enough to answer her questions, they showed their contempt for women reporters by refusing, and telling her if she wanted to interview them, she should go into their locker rooms — where they walked around nude just to taunt her. Because she actually expected a basic level of respect for simply trying to do her job, Olson was subjected to so much venom, even death threats, from both athletes and fans, that she moved to Australia for a few years. The stodgy governing bodies of pro sports finally accepted that women journalists had moved into the formerly all-male press box, weren’t leaving, and should be accommodated, because teams’ ability to attract fans (and their season ticket dollars) depended on press coverage.
