With my luck, the guitarist would sit in front of me just as the movies starts.

Click-to-enlarge image of Self-portrait with family members can be found online in the current-location page, the image Wikipedia page, and Mr. Melcher’s blog entry. In addition to the description, identifying the individuals, in the current-location page, the current-location has a description identifying the various musical instruments. Besides the unused harpsichord at the far left, perhaps being played in this painting, being played here (left to right): cithern, violin, lute, and cello. Other descriptions can be found here, with a different coloration image, close to the coloration used with this (Google translated) description. A timeline of the Dutch artists, active in the 17th century, can be found here. The image Wikipedia page also has links to a couple detail images, including the one I saw yesterday in the collar page, as an example of the ruff collar. The artist’s Wikipedia page and collection (detail images for this painting also found here). So far, 2 works by this artist have been used in Mr. Melcher’s blog.

“They look like a nice family troupe, dear. Who are they?”

“According to the program, they call themselves ‘The Aristocrats’.”

    “They don’t look very aristocratic.”

“Perhaps that will be explained during the performance. I’ve heard that it is quite astounding.”

“Maybe we’ll find out what the plastic sheets they gave us are for, also.”

For anyone interested, I just found out Saturday‘s painting isn’t a Vermeer. I’ve posted a correction there.
