One of the reason’s I thought of Mcalpine’s men was his picture reminded me of the bog farmers trudging off to cut peat. It was reminiscent of my time in Ireland but I saw the same type of thing in France.They used the types of spades and picks seen in the painting .

Grave-diggers (Picts, of course) pick up their picks and go to join the picket line…….(or something to that effect.)
