This painting clearly reflects that the young lady depicted, while not the prettiest of women, was part of a family with money enough to commission the work – The year being 1805, she posed at the very beginning of Napoleon’s rule. I wonder if she survived the coming upheavals.
Pregnancy ended or at least, interrupted, many a female’s harp career (unless the music performed during the third trimester was limited to a handful of treble notes)
There used to be a tea shop in town which had a harpist during lunch time. It was actually very nice to hear. I enjoyed some quiet music while being able to converse with my lunchmate, without the usual blaring overhead speakers or TV other restaurants have.
