When is the last time you saw a seeing eye cat, a guide cat for the blind, a police cat or a rescue cat? Cats are smart in that they are geared more towards self-preservation and cuteness. My cat has the cutest puppy-dog eyes I have ever seen.
Without going into the merits of either animal as a pet, a dog can be trained to be a reliable and better member of the family that he is part of. A cat, not so much. Actually, most cats can’t really be trained easily, so why bother. People enjoy them the way they are. Viva la difference. However, l say, Go Dogs….
okay, let’s have the same discussion about whether dogs are smarter than goldfish… ☺
if you view intelligence in strictly anthropomorphic terms, then dogs are probably going to appear smarter because they’re behavior around humans is geared toward reward generation through obedience. when you consider that cats manage to get humans to give them rewards without any obedience required, which animal seems smarter then…?
All depends on your point of view. Dogs are smarter because they’re capable of learning, and that’s why they’re sent to obedience school. Or, cats are smarter because they refuse to be taught anything, and therefore they’re not stuck with having to go to obedience school.
In a week I will be dog sitting a pug who is dumb as a box of rocks but very sweet and gentle. I would train her to be a therapy dog, but she doesn’t have a chance to learn the obedience required for the test. She’s so cuddly, she would be good, but she really is somewhat limited. We are going to have a lot of fun! She and my beagle are good buds. Then I will probably get my carpets cleaned.

Even if cats went, they’d never listen.

You couldn’t make a cat go to obedience school and you can’t teach any cat new or old tricks.

If you sent the cat to obedience school it would soon have the instructor obeying the cat. Dogs have owners, cats have staff.

Cats aren’t allowed to attend obedience school. The instructors want to teach obedience not show obedience.
Chris almost 2 years ago
that’s cause the cats don’t want to be told what to do nor obey them.

That’s more a matter of how much they care what you think of them than it is intelligence. Cats don’t give a crap.
