Lennie, I like your version. I’ve done that—answered the phone and said, Hi, (fill in name). Not often, and once got someone (clearly of the wrong gender) spluttering Waitwhat?!!
I am so grateful that we have caller ID. I get so many unwanted calls. Most of then want to sell me something or is a scam. The ‘do not call registry’ did help at first but there is no consequence for calling someone that don’t want you to call.

Is the year 2000 so long ago that Caller ID was not common, or commonly known about.

We were early adopters. The real fun was picking up the phone and saying "Hello, this is (first name of the caller).
Another great gag was to answer with the caller’s own answering machine message. “Hi, this is xxxxx. We’re not in, please leave a message.”
