You say: I don't want to go to school! School is so stupid, and the hairy kid sitting two rows away makes faces at me, my backpack is torn, and the school cafeteria has... They hear:
Yes, moms do develop the ability to tune you out. BUT, we get the panic in a voice, we hear pain, we just do not hear whining, griping or complaints, and then again sometimes we just know our child needs us and show up at their school at 2 pm just to check on them to determine how bad something is broken and or bleeding.
I still remember a certain Principles face being so stunned that I knew my son needed me and refused to take his word that he was fine. We found him in the gym where he had fallen from the ropes that they were climbing and he had not come around. Can you say concussion? The Principle after that never turned down a parents request to see how their child was.

And yet if Toby coughs in his sleep at 3:00 AM his mom will wake up. This is the result of millions of years of mom evolution.

A nice homage, Greg, to Gary Larson’s " What Dogs Hear" (blah blah blah Ginger blah blah) and “What Cats Hear” (blahblahblahblahblah) … Nice spin!

No no no. They hear something, but I don’t know how to depict the sound of nails across a chalkboard.
