A large number of jokes, when deconstructed, seem to be mean-spirited. They don’t seem like it at the time of telling, since we all collude in the whole “it’s a joke” mentality. Take, for instance, the two friends confronted on a hike by a bear. One guy drops to the ground and begins to swap his hikers for running shoes. His friend says, “Earl, it don’t matter what yo’ footwear is, you cain’t outrun that bear.” Earl says, “I ain’t gotta outrun him. I just gotta outrun you!” Haha. Oh, wait. That’s just mean.
