Not to mention the money for the dirtbike, pit crew, parts, trailer to haul all the stuff, tools, insurance and extra medical coverage. (And I just have a street bike)

I went through this very same conversation with my oldest son when he wanted to take up extreme BMX biking.

Sure Toby. Have you done the countless hours of practice. The jumps into the haystack in the back yard and the drops into the pool?.Have you taken a learner’s course? A lot of places now offer short 1 day to a couple of weeks courses for beginners on mountain biking stuff. .yeah. guess I’m with dad. But really should go to these events. They are … way cool! (let the kids run wild, talking to all the riders and pit crews)

A guy in my old neighborhood had an extreme dirt bike circuit that he would let the kids use so long as you wore a helmet, which was a rarity in the late 80’s, early 90’s. He would break the bikes of anyone caught not wearing a helmet. The highest mound of earth was 8 feet. A lot of guys got their first broken bone in its pit, but you heal fast at that age.

Better you should break an arm or leg riding a motorbike than to burn all your time in front of a TV or a video game… But Toby doesn’t seem the type to work up to the fifty foot jumps, does he? More like the kid that winds up on the news…

Makes sense for this kind of message on Father’s Day: a father stopping his older son from doing something that could hurt him, after Eddie did something that hurt him, which he regretted since his MOTHER didn’t stop HIM. Falling off a fence.
