yesterday no one believed they could go to a lake and today no one cares. That callous! Dusty should invite Ms Overdunne. She needs the rest.

I hate to be a sexist pig, but WHAT? JOAN I go fishing to be alone. If I must, I go with another man who will say at the most 12 words in 4 hours.. Here comes the sexist pig part. I went fishing with my late wife. She brought a cell phone! She’d come up and start to talk. I would move downstream. She’d come up and start to talk, I’d move downstream. Repeat 24 times.

Lew - Thank you for explaining why many men like to fish. I never could enjoy it myself, and being quiet was one of the reasons. (Dealing it pesky bugs was another reason.) I could never understand the attraction before - drinking beer could easily be done in front of the TV.

I miss Joe Allen Doty. True, I thought at most one third of his comments were worthwhile, but since I was quick to shrug off the other two-thirds, I could really enjoy many of his comments. I’m pretty sure he’d also have something to say about the restorative nature of fishing (which I don’t really understand at all).

I’ve got to admit I couldn’t see what made him depart over the weekend because I only visited after it was all over and his posts (here and on other strips), and perhaps some others, were all deleted.

If and when I went fishing with my late husband I took a book and enjoyed the quiet and I bet Ms Overdunne would too.

I like your attitude, Avon. I disagree with you missing him, but like your attitude about it.

Lew- I prefer to fish alone, too. Since my husband doesn’t like to fish, I sometimes go with my brother. Even then, we go our separate ways on the stream.

The most annoying things that seem to happen when I fish alone are:

1- some guy I don’t know wants to come over and talk, or worse, try to tell me how to fish

2- some guy decides he can walk in and fish right where I am fishing.

I do carry a cell phone- an old one which will only call 911 in emergency. I have both fallen and been stalked while fishing alone.

Ell: I hope your stalker just heard that you know the best fishing holes. It’s still rude, but less creepy.

I wish Joe well, he has as much right to babble as anyone. He took a lot of insults before he took his ball & went home.

JOAN I take back all my mean male remarks. I often take a book, For some unknown reason, I also often forget to bring bait. Because of my fragile male ego, I have to bring home my limit opening day. Aside from that, I try my damndest not to bring home another fish all season.. I think watching the permanence and change of a stream bubbling by me is more therapeutic than any shrink.

ELLIS The third annoying thing that happens is some fish bites and breaks your daydream.

Avon: Just a newcomer here but thought I would check around on some of the sites that Joe visited. I know him from Ginger Meggs but he has disappeared from there too. He mentioned computer glitches a few days ago but it may be more serious.

ChukLitl: Can’t help the feeling Joe has not taken his bat and ball and gone home; more like someone grabbed his bat and hit him over the head with it. Just like us all, Joe related to others in his own way and in my book, that made him a facet on the diamond of life. Let’s hope he is ok and returns.

I miss Joe too! Very well stated usfellers! Joe was Joe, and he certainly was no worse than some of these “so called Christians” who visit this comic website. I enjoyed his stories, and I wish him well also. Those who helped bring him down should be careful, it coudl happen to them too. They will just find another victim to bait! Let’s hope their victim doesn’t bite on it!

I missed yesterday and now find out Joe-A is gone? What happened? He almost always aggravated me with his comments but ain’t nuthin’ wrong with that. A little aggravation gets the thoughts processes going.

I don’t think anyone hit Joe over the head with a bat. From what I see, he was swinging, and some people pointed out his reckless abandon in doing it. I don’t wish Joe ill, but I read things from a few days ago, and refrained from commenting. Mainly because the people I saw asking Joe to explain himself weren’t being mean to him, but fully in their rights to ask him, “What the heck?”

What is sad is I saw Joe take swings at several people, but usfellers seems to think Joe was some sort of saint. Sadly, Joe seems more like the dish it but doesn’t want to take it kind of guy.

    Too bad, really.

Joe wasn’t a sant, but he had no less right to post here than anyone else. Especially here – Elderberries seemed like “his” strip and I only hope he is still gettng the satisfaction of reading it. If so “Hi Joe!”

tamron no usfellers doesn’t think Joe’s a saint, nor do I, but understanding and compassion come into play here. Some people need to learn them, not directed at you. And as for Sunday, obviously, most of you missed the rantings and ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING remarks made by a poster called jackassdroppings and 2 other alias before they left, signed up for the day just to go after Joe. Nice huh?

Folks who said their piece about Joe, after I mentioned him above, THANKS to you all. I felt adrift having missed whatever may have happened over the weekend, but I feel more normal now.

The irony about hitting Joe over the head with a bat, for those of you who never read his rare posts about it over the last couple of years, is that he was indeed brain-injured by trauma to the back of his head some years ago (but long after his service in Viet Nam) … and he described it as having left residual injuries about which he refuses to wallow in self-pity. I always thought that explained 100% of his foibles.
