“The Lockhorns” does demonic-possession gags? Wow, that’s kind of hard-core for them. I guess since Bill Hoest died, Bunny’s trying to make the strip edgy…
J-A”J”D: “So, that ought be Regan MacNeil from ‘The Exorcist’ in that chair.”
No, it oughtn’t. The cartoon is more understandable this way, because few would recognize the name “Regan MacNeil”, but most will recognize “Linda Blair” and make the association with her most famous (iconic) role.
Similarly, if a cartoonist were making a joke involving a woman being grasped in the hand of a 50-foot gorilla, it would be more sensible to drop the name “Fay Wray” than “Ann Darrow”, even though “Ann Darrow” was the name used in both the 1933 original of “King Kong” and the 2005 remake.
Blurring the distinction between actors and the roles they play is a standard comedy device, such as imagining that Mark Hamill carries an actual lightsaber, or that Bill Bixby turns into a giant green monster when he’s angry, or that Ian McKellen has powers of wizardry.
I wish commentors would actually comment on the joke instead of trying to knit pick about some innocuous point that strives to move the attention to their comments.
I think this joke is funny. I’ve seen the movie and I know the name Linda Blair. If I googled the name of the character in the movie, I’d know/recall the actual name of the character. But why would I or most people want to have to Google a character’s name to get the point?
This isn’t Glenn McCoy’s first day on the job. I think he knows what works best. I think it would be awesome to have a cartoonist like this allow certain commentors to fill in for a week to see how they would do.
Exactly, Joe. Most everybody would associate the name “Linda Blair” with the movie; far fewer would recognize the name “Regan MacNeil.” The gag works better the way McCoy wrote it.

When did “The Exorcist” come out? This joke is old and lame! And removed from my page. If I wanted this bleeep, I’d read “The Lockhorns”.

eardroppings, that’s “nit” pick.
Sorry, I just couldn’t resist that particular nit.
By the way, I’ll bet that JA”J”D had to look up Regan MacNeil on IMDb (or some othere source).
