The original purpose of testing was just to find out what you had learned and what you still needed to learn. If a lot of kids missed the same question, then that information needed to be retaught, but in a different fashion. Unfortunately, paper-pushers in DC demand grades as ‘proof’ that teachers are doing their jobs. So teachers have to test a minimum of twice weekly on each topic to have enough to ‘prove’ they’re teaching. Testing has become onerous for teachers and kids. Teachers would rather spend more time helping kids learn than gratuitous grade collecting, but they’re not in charge.

They test in Ontario but everyone passes. Turns out 4% of our high school grads are functionally illiterate when they get to uni or college and need catch up classes.

The problem you have is that you got “stupid grades.” Me. I got “good grades” and never hated school….
