I was in New Mexico when it was being carried to Los Angeles, and the plane carrying the shuttle flew across the freeway just in front of my car, so I got a great view.(I didn’t get any “shut” on my car.)

Medflies doing it? Ha ha, never thought of that! It reminded me of how Ann Romney took her horse to the London Olympics.Seriously I loved the democracy of it – folks on the streets – like the homeless – got the best view.

“…atop a 7 7”? .7-space-7? Forgot to put in the 4, eh shot?

He probably didn’t know if it was a 737, 747 or 767 and left it blank to be filled in later.
It’s a 747, BTW. It’s the only 7-series big enough to carry a shuttle.

Of course, the one you saw is the one that never made orbit. The Enterprise was built for landing tests, plans to space-rate it fell through due to design changes.
Basically it would have had to have been disassembled and rebuilt, rather than just having engines and a heat shield added.

I too, remember seeing the Enterprise (which never went to space) fly over the house astride a 747. It was on display at Hill AFB. I think this was in ’79 or ’80. I found out later that the chase plane was flown by astronaut Deke Slayton. A few years earlier he did a “Bicentennial Minute” from orbit during the Apollo-Soyuz mision.
