You could get your apocalypse almost exactly like the fictional ones. It could turn people into ravenous beasts. And they may be harder to kill as well. Head shots are the kill shots. This scenario could happen.
Look up the average calorie amount of a human being, you will find it is slim pickings indeed. Maybe it might be different with those of greater than average girth.
My usual comment in the hot tub at the gym is, if this starts getting really hot and someone comes by and dumps in bags of potatoes, carrots, onions, and turnips, run.
