Since I am tall I used to request exit seats, now they charge extra for those. Last time I told them they should pay me for the possibility of having to open that door if they screw up.
The first time I flew out of Heathrow Airport, I didn’t know how far you have to walk to get to the gate. When I got there, all the other passengers had already boarded. I handed my confirmed ticket with assigned seat to the nice people at the counter, and they looked at each other for a second, clicked around on the computer for a minute, printed out a new boarding pass and said something about being “bumped up” and “have a nice flight”. Flying from London to L.A. non-stop in “Upper Class” on Virgin Atlantic for the price of a discount ticket is more than one of “life’s little victories”.

Odd, anytime I have had the exit seat, the chairs didn’t recline back.

That last one is great, so long as you don’t need the pull-down tray.
