So RBB&B folded up their tent years ago, but came back this year with a no-animals show a la Cirque du Soleil that I hear is pretty good.

A circus, with animals, goes back to the medieval epoch when strange animals were strange. Training them was added later.

The history of the circus in America is quite interesting. IIRC there was a Ken Burns sort of documentary about it on PBS a few years ago.

While I whole-heartedly agree that circuses employ cruel treatments to train their animals and need to do away with the practice completely, I will admit that as a kid, I always enjoyed watching them perform. Another internal conflict to resolve. Welcome to adulthood.
