Thanks for panel #3. The finale for the Newhart series may be the best one ever. When Dr. Bob Hartley wakes up in bed next to his wife Emily (Suzanne Pleshette) and we find that the entire Newhart series was just a weird dream that Bob had.
cdward, are you aware that one interpretation of the inhabitants of Gilligan’s Island is that they represent the Seven Deadly Sins? I’ve wasted some time debating who represents which…
If I remember the theory, Gilligan was Gluttony, the Skipper was Anger, the Professor was Pride, Maryanne was Envy, Ginger was Lust, Mr. Howell was Greed, and Mrs. Howell was sloth.
Still, the best portrayal ever of the Seven Deadly Sins was in the original Peter Cook/Dudley Moore film “Bedazzled.”
And in my own defense, I’d like to point out that these strips were filed before the LOST finale ever aired. By someone who had never seen the show. I guess I must have guessed well.
If you never saw Lost, then you, of course, have nothing to talk about other than that you didn’t care to be challenged in TV watching. American pride at ignorance is usual and likely got us to where we are today.
The new prisoner series was great in that it brought the ORIGINAL to On Demand so I could fix again after all these years. McKellen is getting to be a bad hobbitt.
Spalinin’ to do: the hidden well was the fountain of youth, of life, from which living waters flow. It ‘s drain was plugged to keep hope and life in after Pandora, who was watching the Island and the lady who adopted Jacob and “Esau”, had opened it up by mistake centuries before. The power of myth being passed through generations (New Age version of religious truth). the fountain gave life and power to it’s protector but also to the smoke monster, the nebulous thing called evil that can tempt anyone at any time. Since it lives in the heart of men, the power that gave life had to be extinguished for a time to take the monster’s life. (Analogy to why we must die and be reborn, spiritually and physically.) With the fountain down, the monster became vulnerable, too. The good Jack (James, John, Jake, like another J word)) vanquished the monster and so the source could be reignited.
Hurley then becomes the new mythology to be made by someone who understands that all religions and faiths come from one source. A god of forces (meaning the Darth Vader analogy was VERY apt.)
The “sideways” was always a flash forward into their time in a self-made purgatory, matrix-like self created reality where they all had to gather to go on. Once they were “enlightened” they could move to the next plane. Reincarnation 101. The spiritual version of the physical story happening concurrently.
Faith is belief in the right things (including the virtues!).
Hope is taking a positive future view, that good will prevail.
Charity is concern for, and active helping of, others.
Fortitude is never giving up.
Justice is being fair and equitable with others.
Prudence is care of and moderation with money.
Temperance is moderation of needed things and abstinence from things which are not needed.

I understand the Jimmy Kimmel show had a scene with Bob Newhart waking up next to one of the Lost stars who was having this weird dream.
Homonylo: I agree. All praise to the great McGoohan. Good thing he died before he could see what they did to his concept in that horrible remake.

The Seven Virtues:
