(And early 19th century—Jane Austen’s period—women’s clothing usually wasn’t four or more layers except in cold weather. Heck very fashionable ladies at that time wore very thin fabric dresses and wetted them so they were transparent. It wasn’t til Vic came to the throne that clothing went all “Victorian.”
As I understood it, Ireland and Mexico never really did much in the way of celebrating their two holidays. But America as usual decided to go overboard on them.
