    The thickness has to be more than 65,000 feet (distance from top of Everest to bottom of the Marianas Trench.

    Of course, if the width of the earth were 24,000 miles, then we’d need something a bit thicker.

    And, I am not going to do the calculation for the gravity above a planar surface… Exercise left for the reader.

    Hint: Use the calculation in the link, and then subtract the integral from R=r to infinity That gets you the field for a disk of radius r.
