Even if he didn’t read the newspaper, he should have noticed the headline shown in the vending machine. This reminded me of that great episode of Northern Exposure when Maggie O’Connell’s fiancé was killed by a reentering satellite.
I think someone’s missing the point. We all tend to be this guy at one time or the other… Sometimes, no matter how many people tell us, or how many obvious signs of impending doom there are, we can be be blind to it. Then when it’s too late, we say “How come nobody told me?” or the ever popular “If I only knew then what I know now…”. Then there’s the classic “How could you let me…!” or “If I had only seen the signs”. We let important things go unnoticed and wind up getting hurt or worse, the people we love get hurt. And it’s our own fault.
I see it more as a commentary on willful ignorance. There are snobs on one side who say things like, “I don’t watch TV” or “I only watch PBS”, and dimwits on the other who are like Larry, or only get their news from one source.

I read two papers, one right, one left. Putting them together doesn’t work.

The least he could’ve done was log on to the internet, turn on the radio, or tv. How do you manage to complete ignore ALL news?
